Course overview
This advanced level course covers key theoretical and practical aspects of biological and chemical sciences.
Course description
This is a wide-ranging course covering the theoretical and practical aspects of modern sciences. You will specialise in two of the major branches of science – chemistry and biology.
This will provide the opportunity to further enhance practical skills and innovation, project management and presentation. These aspects will prove of great value as you progress to further study or employment.
What you will experience
- Organic, Inorganic & Physical Chemistry
- Biology & Biochemistry
- Physiology, Microbiology & Analytical Science
- Chemistry
- Biology Instrumental Analysis
- Opportunity to specialise in particular aspects, for example in either human metabolism or advanced organic chemistry
- Undertake a major laboratory-based project in chemistry or biology.
Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)
This course is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme. This means that you are required to have access to your own laptop computer, netbook or similar device in class each day that you are in college.
If you do not already own a suitable device you can apply for a student loan from SAAS, if eligible, to fund the cost of purchasing a device.
Entry requirements
- Two Highers in Chemistry and Biology/ Human Biology, plus National 5 Maths at grade C or above (Applications of Maths is not accepted)
- If you only have one Higher in Chemistry or Biology, you need a National 5 at grade B for the other
Or
- Completion of SCQF Level 6 NC Applied Science – grade B or above (Chemistry/ Biology route)
Or
- Completion of SCQF Level 6 Forensic Science & Biotechnology
Or
- Completion of Science: Routes to Higher Education – including Highers in Chemistry, Biology and Maths.
Learning outcome
HND Applied Science (SCQF Level 8)
